IT in Kenya - Phenomenal Growth
Kenya
has always been in the forefront of developments in Information
Technology and has emerged as one of Africa’s leaders in this
area. Indeed, Information Technology is one of the fastest growing
sectors in the country.
In
recent years, there has been a considerable drop in the cost of
hardware and software, and this has further led to the growth of
this sector.
Information
Technology is now in use in various sectors of the economy such as
banking, accounting, medical services, transportation, mining,
research, defense, agriculture, and communications. Key Kenyan
para-statal organizations and some government institutions are
also progressively making use of Information Technology.
Skilled
Personnel
Most
Kenyan universities offer degree courses in IT and various
colleges, technical and management training institutions offer
diploma courses. Kenya therefore has skilled personnel in the IT
profession, including computer programmers, software developers,
hardware maintenance engineers, systems analysts, and I T
consultants AR-SA".
The
Kenya Government has also started training its own staff on IT
related subjects and proposes mainstreaming of IT training within
all schools, colleges and universities.
