System
Kenya
has a well developed education system, with the primary language
of instruction being English. There exists a large pool of English
speaking workers, trained in various professions. There are over
11 universities, 4 polytechnics, 41 technical training
institutions, and several management training institutions in the
country.
Information
Technology degrees are offered by most of Kenyan universities,
while diploma courses are also offered by both the public and
private sector technical and management training institutions.
Remarkable
Initiatives
The
African
Virtual University project based in Nairobi, Kenya links
students across the continent to classrooms and libraries
world-wide via satellite. Many of these students will soon be able
to obtain degrees in this way in computer science, computer
engineering and electrical engineering. More than 12,000 students
have completed semester-long courses in engineering and in the
sciences and more than 2,500 professionals have attended
management seminars on topics such as Strategy and Innovation,
Entrepreneurship, Global Competencies and E-commerce.
KENET
is another highly successful educational initiative. It is a
network of 40,000 educational institutions and aims to provide
affordable access to several academic institutions across the
country.
